In 1864 Dodgson wrote and illustrated his story. The cover is a reproduction of this manuscript. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland had to overcome bad reviews before becoming one of the most popular children's books. It all began in 1862 when the author Charles Ludwig Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) took three sisters on a boat trip down the Thames. He told them the story of a young girl who fell down a rabbit hole and landed in a wonderful world full of peculiar creatures. The character of Alice was inspired by her younger sister, Alice Liddel, who liked Dodgson's story so much that she urged him to write it for her. Dodgson complied and first included his own drawings before inviting John Tenniel to add his own. By the time the sequel, Through the Looking Glass, was published in 1871, Alice had found her place in the hearts of readers. The books are known for their absurd imagery, peculiar logic, and wonderful wordplay. The cover is a reproduction of the manuscript written in 1864 and is accompanied by an original illustration by Dodgson.
