It is now generally accepted that William Shakespeare was the original author of the part reproduced on our cover. William Shakespeare (1564-1616), the greatest English writer, left very few handwritten texts. Sir Thomas More (1595), a play that was banned from performance, was written and rewritten by five different authors, including Shakespeare himself. Today everyone agrees that at least three pages were written by the great playwright. Disgusted by the intolerance of his time in England, he defended foreigners and emigrants.
Not even one of you should grow old
to the scowling bandits
with identical hands, reasons, and rights
who would strip you and men, like hungry fish
ready to devour each other.
